The United States expanded to the west very rapidly in the first half of the 19th century. It purchased the Louisiana Territory from France, bought Florida from Spain, obtained the territories of New Mexico,Texas and California through a war against Mexico, and negotiated with Britain for the Oregon Territory.By 1846,it had spread to the Pacific coast and controlled almost all the land in today’s 48 continental states. The rapidity of the expansion caused many problems, which ultimately played a part in throwing the country into the Civil War.
