Canada came into being as a nation⁃state on July 1，1867 when the British North America Act combined the British colonies in North America into the Dominion of Canada.However，the country traces its origin to the 17th century when Britain and France fought for colonial control of the North American continent.Although Canada is a member of the British Commonwealth，it inherited both British and French languages，culture and religions.
