Text A Sports in the Medieval Times

2-1 Horseback and Sword-fighting

Religion was far more important in almost every area of medieval life than it is in most modern societies. The vastmajority of people in Europe followed the Christian religion under the authority of the Roman Catholic Church. It ruled civilization and held the views that“body is the prison of soul,is the entrance of the evil, any pleasure is sin”.Medieval villages were organized around local churches, and larger towns would devote generations of labor and resources to build large cathedrals.Medieval people counted on the church to provide social services, spiritual guidance and protection from hardships such as famines or plagues.

Though Religion and the church played a central role in Medieval history but the inhabitants of that time period also knew how to entertain themselves.Aside from festivals, acrobatics, dancing and music, people from the Medieval times enjoyed playing a wide variety of games and sports.

Many of the sporting events we know and play at present can be traced back to the Middle Ages1.However,due to vague rules, many Medieval sports took on deadly proportions. Not only were they physically demanding but there was little to zero emphasis on safety.Animals were sometimes involved such as in the case of hawking and hunting.Despite the hazards that came with some sports, many Medieval resident swere still eager to join in the fun.
