The Sustainability Assessment Protocol has been developed pri marily to assist IHA me mbers in assessing perf or mance against criteria described in t he I HA Sustainabilit y Guidelines.

The docu ment is in t hree sections.The first section(SECTION A -NEW ENERGY OPTIONS)gives general guidance on sustainability issues that should be considered when assessing new ener gy suppl y options.This section describes each of t he 20 selected sustainability aspects and lists key considerations and assessment requirements f or each aspect.It can be used as part of a preli minar y due diligence review of pr oposed new ener gy projects.It should also be usef ul f or policy and decision makers when developing energy policies and assessing f ut ure ener gy options requirements.(https://www.daowen.com)

Assess ments associated with the second section(SECTION B -NEW HYDRO PROJECTS)and t hir d section(SECTION C -OPERATING HYDROPOWER FACILITIES)rely on objective evidence to support a sustainability score against each of t wenty sustainability aspects.These aspects of sustainability have been selected to give appropriate coverage to relevant economic,social,and environ mental issues.Assess ment is scored fr o m 5 t hr ough to zer o,and l ooks at bot h process and perf or mance against each aspect or criteria.

Assessing process relies on t he presence or ot her wise of a systematic approach to managing economic,social and environ mental issues.The next section in this docu ment,A Systematic Management Ap pr oach to Sustainability,pr ovides more detail on t his.A section titled Obtaining Obj ective Evidence is also included to assist in the process of obtaining scores against each of t he t wenty sustainability aspect.
