◎Sun Jing:Hard Student with “Hair Hung from Beam”

Sun Jing, styled Wenbao, was born in Xindu (now Jizhou City,Hengshui) in the Han Dynasty.According to the Imperial Readings of the Taiping Era (Taiping Imperial Encyclopaedia),he “studies hard, and doesn’t stop studying in the morning and night.” He locked the door and stayed at home, reading and studying all the year round,so he was known as “Mr.Closed Door.” Sun Jing studied hard and often stayed up all night. In order to eliminate sleepiness,he tied his long hair to the beam on the roof.If he lowered his head to sleep,he would wake up because his hair was pulled. With his unique spirit of “hair hung from beam,” Sun Jing learned from the present and the past, and became a famous scholar full of learning at that time.Later generations had great respect for Sun Jing’s such spirit of hard study,so that they called “hanging hair on beam and stabbing thigh” by combining his story and Su Qin’s one that he “stabbed his thigh if feeling sleepy while reading” in the Warring States Period,to educate children. In the Three-Character Scripture (San Zi Jing),there is a saying that “hanging hair on beam, stabbing thigh, requiring no supervising, but studying diligently.” Sun Jing,Su Qin,Che Yin,who read by the light of bagged fireflies, and Sun Kang, who read by the reflected light of snow, are taken as the models of studying hard.(https://www.daowen.com)
