◎Inscription on Jieshi Gate

Li Si

Note: In 215 BC, Emperor Shihuang of the Qin Dynasty came to the ancient Jieshi area for the fourth time, and built a temporary palace.He ordered Prime Minister Li Si to create and engrave the Inscription on Jieshi Gate (Jie Shi Men Ci) on the Jieshi Gate (it was judged to be the Nantian Gate on the coast of Jinshanzui, Beidaihe, because the handwriting has been weathered due to years).It is a tribute to Qin Shi Huang, so this place was named “Qinhuangdao.”

The main idea of the inscriptions is as follows: Our first emperor of the Qin Dynasty founded the great Qin Empire.With his benevolent political measures, he merged all the dukes who governed their territories and fought each other constantly and created a stable situation in the country.In the 32nd year of the reign of the emperor, he took a bamboo wooden sedan chair to Jieshi Mountain.Standing on the top of Mount Tai, he looked just like observing the whole world and ruling the earth without limitation.The emperor of our country has devoted all his money and eあorts to form the troops representing a just cause and fight against the unjust monarchs of the six states,so that those evil forces against the will of the people died.The military men of the six states like to help their tyrants, so they must be killed completely.Their civil oきcials have nothing to do with their crimes, so they may be allowed to restore their positions.If there are such diあerences in punishment and reward on diあerent persons, the mass will surely admire our emperor.The emperor is benevolent and generous.He comments on his servants'merits and rewards according to the actual actions and results.He benefits his people with oxen and horses.His royal grace and kindness are so vast that the land in the country is full of rich harvests.The fate of the heaven inspired the divine power of the emperor.By means of the virtue of the imperial court, the vassals have been exterminated, who used to carry out their own aあairs and fight each other frequently.The emperor united the whole country and his government is the only one in this dynasty.After destroying the inner cities and outer walls of the capitals of the six states, which divided the country, they decided to open some ponds and canals, and connect them with rivers for irrigation and transportation.The deep ditches and high horst which were once occupied by the separatist regimes, were all leveled off.The emperor's general unity of the country has been determined basically,and the common people have no reason or basis for any resentment, slander,or trouble any longer.The whole country is under the mercy and control of his majesty.Therefore men are happy to work in the fields, and come back home early in the evening, while women weave, mend, look after their husbands and educate their children.All men and women, old and young, all industries are all orderly.The emperor has spread his virtue and kindness to all walks of life.Based on agriculture and mulberry, people will continue to farm and cultivate in future years.The people of our country have lived and worked in peace and contentment.All the oきcials and workers praised the great achievements of the emperor, and proposed to set up a stone tablet with inscriptions to clarify the legal rules of the Qin Dynasty.
