Some of Mr.Zhu's work may be with Dr.Richard Wolf, assistant professor of biological sciences.

Mr.Zhu's visit here is the result of last year's trip to UMBC by a delegation of Chinese bontonists.Zhu,who is living in the dorms, finds students here friendly and helpful. He said,“I have been here only for 5 days, but I enjoy the life on campus very much,so many students are all very kind to me...Although I am already 40 years old...I feel younger than before(he arrived).”

Zhu does have one thing in common with many dorm students.“The first day the food in the cafeteria didn't make me feel very well.”he said.

Zhu has met with many of the students studying here from Taiwan,China.“We are all Chinese:we should all be friends,”he said.

Mr.Zhu chose to study in the U.S.because of the advanced science and technology here.He hopes to get a lot of knowledge in this country.“He turned down a fellowship from the the Carnegie Institution of Washington,Which is affiliated with Stanford.”I chose UMBC for Dr.Kung's reputation, his work is very interesting. His work is very important to solve many economic problems.”he said.

Zhu,who left a wife and a seven year old son in China, says his family and he realize the separation is a sacrifice that must be made in order to advance his education.(https://www.daowen.com)

Zhu studied English for a year in a university in China, but to really make progress he had to study and read English publications on his own.He finds the American pronunciation different from the more British English he was laught. However,he speaks English very well.

At UMBC,Zhu will take an English course as well as audit Advanced Topics in Plant Physiology taught by Dr.Kung.

“I never imagined I could come here, several years ago,”he said.“Now our countries are very friendly.”he added.

Zhu feels strongly that both the U.S.and the People's Republic of China can benefit from cultural and technical exchange.“Many people in China now favor the U.S..”he said.
