Now satellites are helping to forecast the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere, because this is where the weather forms. They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists (气象学家) can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.

Today, nearly 500 weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too.In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.

So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 to 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three to five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead.

The spirit of adventure has become the tradition of the American people. When the first “white”American left England in 1606 to settle in Virginia in search of freedom and fortune, they suffered terribly. After five years only 50 colonists were left out of 500. As for the colonists who landed in New England from the Mayflower in 1620, more than half died of disease during the first winter. These New Englanders, who became known as the Pilgrim Fathers, left behind them all security and everything that was familiar. They knew they had a big chance of sinking in the ocean. They faced tremendous uncertainty and hardship on the new land. Since they adventured to explore the New World as to seek the opportunities of life, the spirit of bravery and adventure was established as the important part of the national spirits.

As one of the most influential social values and spirits in America, the spirit of adventure has been shaped and developed in many aspects of the American society such as migration, frontier movement, mobility and change, and even in sports and outdoor activities.
