The United Kingdom has many holidays.Most of the holidays commemorate historical events,historical figures or promote common national traditions.Besides national holidays,different ethnic groups also celebrate their own traditional holidays and festivals.

The May Day holiday falls on May 1.Unlike the May 1 holiday in some other countries,May Day in England does not recognize workers.Instead,the day sees people going out to pick mayflowers to adorn their homes,decorating maypoles by winding streamers around them while dancing,and lighting bonfires at night.

Guy Fawkes Day or Fireworks Night falls on November 5th.It is to celebrate the British monarchy and Parliament.Guy Fawkes was one of the 13th conspirators who planned a gunpowder explosion aimed at killing King James I and the members of Parliament on the assembly’s opening day,November 5th,1605.

Saint Patrick’s Day falls on March 17th each year.On this day,Northern Catholics celebrate the birthday of patron saint of Ireland,St.Patrick.Patrick was a Catholic bishop who lived in the 5th century and is thought to have brought Christianity to Ireland.It is considered very lucky to wear something green on this day.

Boxing Day falls on December 26th,the day after Christmas.Traditionally,on this day,employers distributed money,cloth(material),food or other valuable good to their employees.Now it is an important day for sporting events and the start of the post⁃Christmas sales.
