The United States emerged from World WarⅡas the most powerful nation in the world.After the war,the American economy continued to grow,although it underwent periodic recessions.The country later underwent many important social changes.The Civil Rights Movement ended racial segregation and the new women’s movement changed people’s perception about women’s position in the society.Politically,its system experienced some serious tests.Internationally,it fought a long Cold War with the Soviet Union and finally became the superpower in the world when the Soviet Union was dissolved in 1990.The end of the Cold War did not bring peace,however.America has been fighting a war against terrorism since 2001.Its economy also experienced serious problems.
