2.3 Studies on Advising

Advising is a very common phenomenon in both daily conversations and institutional interactions, as Decapua and Huber (1995, p. 128) point out:Indeed, we argue that advice is perhaps one of the most ubiquitous speech acts precisely because it is so often an integral part of normal conversational interaction. Advice seems to be a part of almost any type of social, professional or other type of encounter. And because it is such a part of normal conversation, we are generally unaware of the pervasive nature of advice.

The following sections will consider two approaches to advising and then identity construction in advising.
