This section will first show how advising acts were identified and extracted from each data set. It will then introduce the discourse-analytic method adopted to analyze identity construction, present the linguistic variables for identity construction, report the theoretical basis of and criteria for classifying identities constructed in institutional interactions and discuss contextual correlates involved in academic advising interaction.
