Chapter Five Constructing Identities Through Making Linguistic Choices

This chapter will examine the identities constructed by expert advice-givers in their advising sequences in Chinese PhD dissertation proposal presentation meetings in terms of the linguistic choices made for their construction. As discussed in Section 4.2.3, the identities constructed in institutional interactions can be classified into two general categories. Each category can be further divided into different subcategories in terms of what aspects are made salient through making linguistic choices in dynamic process of interaction. These categories and subcategories will be examined in Sections 5.1 and 5.2, based on the linguistic variables for identity construction and the theoretical basis of and criteria for classifying identities discussed in Sections 4.2.2 and 4.2.3. The distribution of these identities in advising sequences will be presented in Section 5.3, and Section 5.4 will summarize the main contents of this chapter.
