5.2 Deviational Identities and Linguistic Choices for Their Construction

It has been established above that the default identity for the academic committee members in the present study is that of the expert. However, it is found that these expert advice-givers also construct other identities in their advising sequences, namely the teacher identity, the identity of a virtual advice-receiver, the identity of a collegial researcher, the identity of a novice researcher and the identity of a layperson. These identities are deviational ones because they are less expected or not expected at all in this academic community of practice. They will be discussed in detail in the following subsections.
