6.2 Identity Shift in Academic Advising Sequences
The identity shift means that advice-givers may shift from the construction of one identity to another in the dynamic process of an advising sequence. It is more complicated than identity modification discussed in Section 6.1. In order to draw a full picture of the identity shift, it is classified into three categories in terms of whether the identity shift has a relatively clear sequential order. In the first category, the identity shift is constructed in a clear sequential order in an advising sequence. The second category is when there is the alternate construction of two identities in an advising sequence. The last category is where the construction of one identity is embedded in another one. These three categories will be examined in detail in the following three sections respectively.
