Hawaii Recreational Activities
The enchanting Hawaiian Islands offer dozens of recreational activities for a range of travelers. Whether a person wishes to spend their time in or on the water or on lush terra firma of the Aloha state, many rejuvenating adventures await. Here are some of the activities featured on the 4000-square-mile Big Island of Hawaii.
Snorkeling and Scuba
Some of the best spots for snorkeling are the Hapuna Beach State Recreation area and the Sea Caves near Pu’uhonua o Honaunau on the Kona-Kohala Coast. This coast is also great for diving. Places such as Turtle Pinnacle, Wall’s Wall and Black Coral Forest are recommended in the article “Blue Hawaii” in the February 2009 issue of Alaska Airlines Magazine. Surfing
Surfing is one of the oldest and most revered pastimes in Hawaii. Though the world-class waves are mostly found at O’ahu or Maui, there is a flourishing surf culture on the Big Island.The best spots for surfing include Pine Trees off Highway 11, Kahalu’u Beach Park, Banyans,Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area and Honoli’I Cove off Highway 19.
Hiking and Trekking
The Big Island has five volcanoes, all of which are still active. (2)____. There are more than 60 hiking trails on the Big Island that vary in difficulty and length, from half-mile walks to 38-mile backpacking trips. Several hikes have significant local history, botanical, geological or hydrological features. Some trails will require hikers to have permits as well as for camping and cabin stays. Kayaking

Kayaking is a great way to get a new perspective of the island and view wildlife from offshore. By paddling for 30 to 60 minutes across Kealakekua Bay, you can see the Captain Cook Monument, where Capt. James Cook landed in 1778.
Other Recreational Activities
Scores of other activities abound in Hawaii, including body surfing and boogie boarding,whale watching, boat or submarine tours and relaxing on one of the island’s picturesque beaches.
