The Legend of the Bai People's King
It was said that Monicha, the mother of the Bai people's King, lived in Yiluocong Village in Baoshan and near to Yellow Dragon Pool. One day she went to Yellow Dragon Pool to wash clothes and met Yellow Dragon playing around, who was attracted by Monicha's beauty and then turned into a big fish splashing water to molest her.Since then,in her sleep late at night,Monicha felt in a trance that a young man came to sleep with her and disappeared at dawn.
Soon,Monicha was pregnant and her belly grew bigger day by day.Her parents blamed her, saying that it was the most shameful thing for a girl to get pregnant before she got married, and her behaviour ruined her family's reputation.Monicha shyly told her parents the truth and her parents felt puzzled.Soon after,Monicha gave birth to nine sons.Only three months later, the nine children could run and play around.
The county magistrate heard about it but he did not believe it.So he ordered Monicha and her nine children to be called for questioning in person. For fear of Monicha being unlucky and bringing bad luck to the county government, the county magistrate ordered to set up a platform on the plain ground.Monicha and her nine sons were taken to near the platform by soldiers and officers. While the county magistrate was questioning Monicha, the nine children ran to play with the sand.Later, there were nine earth bags in this place, which were called Jiulonggang(nine dragons'post).
It was not easy for Monicha to feed them, and life was getting harder and harder. One night,Yellow Dragon turned into a fair-complexioned scholar and came to meet with Monicha.Monicha complained bitterly and asked Yellow Dragon to take his sons back.Since all his sons grew up,Yellow Dragon agreed to take his sons with him at a certain time one day near Yellow Dragon Pool to ease the burden of Monicha.
When the moment came,Monicha took her nine sons to Yellow Dragon Pool and threw her sons into the pool one by one with tears.Eight sons were in the pool, but the last son was left.He pulled Monicha's clothes and refused to leave his mother.Yellow Dragon became a fair-complexioned scholar again and said to Manicha,“This ninth son will stay with you.In the future,he will have the blessing of being a king.”After saying that,he went into the pool and disappeared with other sons.
Monicha took pains and worked hard, devoted herself to raising the ninth son of Yellow Dragon and named him Xinuluo. When Xinuluo was fifteen or sixteen years old,he was extremely powerful. He always took up the cudgels for the injured party and stirred up troubles. He could not stay in Yiluocong Village any more,so Monicha took him to Menghua(Weishan County),where they found a piece of land, built a thatched house, and cultivated the land. They lived in peace.
In order to choose the king of Dali,Guanyin begged alms and visited the talented. Finally she came to Menghua with beating a bell and knew about Xinuluo. One day,Xinuluo was ploughing the field, and his mother,Monicha, just finished some porridge and was planning to send it to her son for lunch.Guanyin came to their house and said to Monicha,“Old woman,I am a monk from the west and come here for begging alms.”
When Monicha heard this, she was deeply moved. She thought to herself:The monk who came all the way here to beg for alms was great.Even if she didn't have enough to eat or even made her son hungry, she had to feed the monk,so she brought the porridge to Guanyin without hesitation.Guanyin ate all the porridge in one breath and said good-bye to Monicha.Monicha had to start a fire and cook some porridge for her son.Soon the porridge was cooked well.Unexpectedly,Guanyin turned into another monk and came in to beg for alms in the same tone as the previous monk.Monicha gave the newly cooked porridge to the monk. When the sun was about to set down, she made porridge for the third time and sent it to her son.Xinuluo was very hungry, and he asked his mother why she came so late.Monicha told him about the monks'story, and Xinuluo felt puzzled. When he was about to eat,a monk appeared before them.Xinuluo saluted the monk respectfully and asked,“Why did you come to this mountain village?”
The monk replied,“I'm hungry and I can't walk further, and Ineed something to eat.”Xinuluo felt sympathy for the monk and gave the porridge to the monk. After the monk finished the porridge,he said to Xinuluo,“I need your stick.”Xinuluo thought that a stick was nothing important, and he could go home to do a few more sticks. Then he said without hesitation:“Since you need it,you just take it!”
Guanyin put down the stick, and calmly pulled out the sword that he was carrying, and asked Xinuluo to cut down the stick with the sword.Knowing nothing about the mystery of it,Xinuluo cut the stick thirteen times. When he finished,Guanyin said to him with a smile,“Congratulations,Xinuluo! From now on you will be the king of the Bai people, and your descendants will continue to be kings for thirteen dynasties. You will be waiting at home, and in a few days some Bai people from Dali will greet you.”With this word, the monk flew deep into the clouds.
And sure enough,at dawn on the third day,Xinuluo heard a chorus of birds singing all around the house. At mid-afternoon,a group of people arrived, carrying the sedan chair with colorful flowers, playing the suona and the sheng drum, inviting Xinuluo and his mother to Dali.
Later,Xinuluo became the king of the Bai people, and his descendants continued to be kings for thirteen dynasties in Dali.
