Formation of Yes-No Questions

In English,a Yes-No question is known as a general question. The English syntax stipulates that for a typical Yes-No question, the auxiliary verb/modal comes first, the subject comes second, the bare infinitive(main verb)third and then the object plus other information. And,of course, there are also rules on subject-verb agreement and on tenses. The word order of Yes-No questions in English requires an inversion of the positioning of the subject and the verb and other necessary adjustments. To this end,the Chinese word order in Yes-No questions appears almost like a no-brainer as it is free from constraints from subject-verb inversion and subject-verb number agreement. We advise our students to start from the base model,e.g.the equivalent statement(or the full answer sentence to a Yes-No question). The process is so simple, students only need to add a ma(Chinese question word)to the end of the statement to form a completely new Yes-No question.
