Preface

H istoric personality’s residence has witnessed the extraordinary life of a famous person in some form.It is an important memorial, landscape, and cultural resource, which can provide opportunities for creating excellent education method, tourism destination, local identity, and eventually promote the sustainable development of social, economic, environmental, and cultural benefits.However, due to misunderstandings and inappropriate interpretations, it is difficult to be optimistic with respect to the continued protection and use of these residences.Especially under the pressures of modern urbanization, these residences have either been preserved and used in improper ways, or gradually deteriorated before finally being demolished.The historical personalities’ residences are facing serious threats.Without enough attention being paid to these problems, the on-going degradation of these notable residences will cause irreparable damage to the historical culture environment of our society.Without an active preservation and sustainable development strategy, the vivid historic scene and cultural spiritual atmosphere these residences contain will slowly disappear, which will eventually impact the sustainable development of local identity and economy seriously.

In view of this phenomenon, integrating a holistic sustainable development strategy into the protection practice of these notable residences is a vital issue.How can we protect and restore these memorial residences authentically while respecting them with a sustainable development strategy? How can we make full use of these memorial places within the cultural, environmental, social, and economic sustainability perspective? How can we retain cultural uniqueness of these memorial residences, by which improve the local identity? Finally, how should we enhance these historic personalities’ influences and integrate their spirits into contemporary society continuously? These questions are still under discussion.And they are also the questions this book proposes to consider and answer.

Through investigating the evolution of international architectural heritage policies, the development of Chinese architectural heritage legislation and local characteristically restoration policies, this book aims to form a theoretical framework for the preservation and sustainable development of a special kind of architectural heritage: the former residence of a historic personality with respect to current urbanization level.Then by discussing the definition, value, preservation, and usage status of the historic personalities’ residences worldwide, the book analyses the unique characteristics of the historic personality’s residence, which is different from other architectural heritage types.With a specific focus on discovering the natural and man-made disaster risks faced by historical personalities’ residences under the impact of the rapid urbanization process within Jinan, the author discusses the architectural heritage protection and usage policies of Jinan.According to the specific urbanization characteristics of Jinan, the book produces practicable principles of preservation and development with sustainable strategies for memorial residences of historic personalities in Jinan.The book goes on to explore the potential for feasible protection strategies of tangible and intangible culture for these famous residences concerning their cultural, social, economic, and ecological sustainable development, and produces practical principles for preserving and developing Jinan historic personalities’ residences as memorials.(https://www.daowen.com)
