5.4.2 Complex Property Rights

Due to historic issues, the property rights of historic personalities’ residences in Jinan are very complicated, which also brings many difficulties to any protection work.There are now only ten famous residences left in Jinan, including memorial halls, museums, office buildings, family residences of the historic personalities’ descendants, and large miscellaneous houses for rent.The memorial residences belonging to the Government are usually in better condition, but sometimes improper restoration and usage methods have damaged the buildings.Those memorial residences which belongs to individuals often lack strict management systems and preservation consciousness.The original building has been renovated without regard to its historical significance.Some even have become a complex yard with unrecognizable architectural patterns (Fig.5-20, 5-21).
