3.1 Introduction
This chapter outlines an integrated semiotic and sociocultural analytical framework of disciplinary identities construction. The discussion covers the systemic functional theory and sociocultural theory models of language and identity construction in context. The review of SFL begins with a detailed discussion on the co-relation between text, context and register, followed by a lexicogrammatical and semantic analytical model of text. Moreover, the current study argues that the meaning of group membership affiliation has not been considered in interpreting the co-construction of individuals and context. For this reason, this chapter seeks to locate the identity research in a social field, although the analysis of a language user in text and context is primarily of systemic functional orientation. Finally, Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory on language development and Wenger’s belonging modes associated with communities of practice are employed as a complement.
