4.2.1 Void
Example 1
“He is not the kind of young man—there is a something wanting—his figure is not striking;it has none of that grace which I should expect in the man who could seriously attach my sister.”(Marianne)
“Oh!Mama, how spiritless, how tame was Edward's manner in reading to us last night!I felt for my sister most severely.Yet she bore it with so much composure, she seemed scarcely to notice it.I could hardly keep my seat.To hear those beautiful lines which have frequently almost driven me wild, pronounced with such impenetrable calmness, such dreadful indifference!”(Marrianne)
“He would certainly have done more justice to simple and elegant prose.I thought so at the time;but you would give him Cowper.”(Elinor)
This is a dialogue between Marianne and Elinor talking about Edward Ferrars's taste for arts after his reading.Edward was Mrs John Dashwood's brother, who came to Norland after his sister.Elinor thought he was quite different from his narrow-minded and selfish sister.Instead, she thought his behavior could give every indication of an open affectionate heart. His understanding was good, and his education had given it solid improvement. Here is this dialogue,Marianne thought Edward had no real taste. But her sister was quite disagreeable because she thought one's real taste of education should not be only judged by reading. So on the surface Elinor made some excuses for Edward, saying that if he read from some other styles instead of Cowper,he would show his taste. But in fact, from his reading we know,no matter what he read, his reading will not satisfy Marianne's taste. So what Elinor said was void because Edward was inappropriate person to read.Elinor's real intention was to mock her sister Marianne's unfair saying about Edward.
Example 2
“I have found you out in spite of all your tricks.I know where you spent the morning.”(Mrs.Jennings)
Marianne colored,and replied very hastily,“where,pray?”
“Did not you know,”said Willoughby,“that we had been out in my curricle?”
...
“I am afraid,Miss Marianne,”said Sir John,“you have not been able to take your usual walk to Allenham to-day.”
Here, the last paragraph is an ironic saying from Sir John.As the first part told us,almost everyone in Barton Park got to know that Marianne went to visit Willoughby's living place secretly.Guessing Mr.Willoughby might fall in love with Marianne,Sir John intentionally wanted to make a joking about them.Obviously, his saying didn't suit the prevailing convention that women should not pay the original visit to a new house without the official introduction. So this suggestion made by Sir John was void for its violating the social conventions.By the way,Marianne's first visit to Willoughby's was in secret,so she didn't want anyone to know about it;surely she would not and could not go there frequently. So what Sir John said is really void.By going against on the felicity conditions,Sir John actually intended to mock the lovers.
