Conventional news reporting depends largely, or almost entirely on materials provided by others, such as key participants in the events, government departments, companies, NGOs, think tanks, experts etc. The process is driven by news events and responds to the latest developments in a timely and efficient fashion. In this sense, conventional news reports are fundamentally reactive, if not passive. (Hunter and Lee, M 2011)(https://www.daowen.com)
In addition to all the external sources necessary to conventional news reports, investigative reporting depends hugely on material obtained through the reporter’s own efforts. Open sources and external expertise must be channeled into the reporters’ own initiatives and integrated into an overarching scheme encompassing every aspect of the entire project. That’s why it’s often called “enterprise reporting”,(Roger, Tony 2020) to highlight the commanding role of reporters’ originality, critical thinking, analytical acumen, and the capacity to steer something from scratch to finish. Competent investigative reporters would never be content w ith press releases, or citing other media reports.
