5.2 Cohesion and Coherence
An im portant aim of textual organization is to optimize readability.During the process of textual organization, cohesion and coherence are conductive to the continuity ofmeaning.Halliday&Hasan(1985:94)defined the function of cohesion in relation to coherence as follow s:“Cohesion is the foundation on which the edifice of coherence is built.”Beaugrande and Dressler(1981:71),on the other hand, valued coherence over cohesion when they pointed out that“the cohesion of the surface text rests on the presupposed coherence of the text world”.The writer suppose that instead of being mutually exclusive, logical cohesion and textual coherence supplement each other and jointly im prove the continuity ofmeaning. To achieve a deep understanding of a text, the hearer or reader has to build a sem antic interface between the logical cohesion and coherence. The so-called semantic interface refers to the potential meaning or implication of a text.To find a semantic interface involves resorting to the pragm atic reasoning on the basis of the situationality and contextuality of a text.(https://www.daowen.com)
