Brief history:

This Institute, originally a research section of History Department, was established in 1985, with focus on research work and graduate program. It is one of“top three” among Chinese universities on the study of American history. The faculty members have done some research work on American historiography and the writings of F.J. Turner and C.A.Beard in Particular, the United States in late 19 century, the reconstruction of American South, U.S. diplomacy during early 20th century, and finished two national research projects. Recent research work, with two nationa1 research grants, concentrates on American Immigration and the Urbanization in American West respectively. There are graduate program for M .A. and Ph.D. degrees in this Institute. So far, eighteen graduate students got their M.A. degrees and three got Ph.D. degrees. There are now six graduate students are studying for M.A. degree and four for Ph.D. degrees.

Besides the research work and graduate programs, we have established the academic relations with some American universities since 1982. Firstly, we have exchanged books and materials with Harvard - Yenching Library, Harvard University,Wisconsin University at Milwaukee, California State University at Northridge and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Secondly, We have invited some American scholars, such as R.Horsman from WUM, J.Murphy and H .Ammon from SIU,C.McCLESKEY from University of Virginia, S.L.Flader from University of Missouri at Columbia, A.H. Miller from University of Iowa, S.H. Harris from CSU at Northridge,etc., to give lectures in our school. Our Institute is also involved in the Fulbright exchange programs, with three faculty members were sent to the U .S. to conduct some research projects. One American professor, Dr. Daniel M Amos from Pacific University came to our Institute to teach the graduate class.

As a practical way for academic exchange, we have discussed some research topics with American scholars through TPC sponsored by American Consulate General in Shenyang for five times.

Publications:

We have written several books and more than sixty articles since 1979, which were published in various academic journals and periodicals of China. Among these articles,more than ten were published in the national first-rate journals .One of the book,The United States During the Civil War and the Gilded Age published by People’s Press,received some awards.

Research agenda:

We are now working on two research projects. One is on the American nationalities and immigration, the other is on the urbanization of American West. We will try to write some articles and books as the results of these projects. Later, the study on the Afro-Americans curing since the sixties will be added to the research agenda.

Other Facilities:

There is a small library in our Institute, with more than 2000 copies of books and some periodicals in English. Some of them were provided as gifts by the American Historical Association, California State University at Northridge, Wisconsin University at Milwaukee, Books for Asia under the Asian Foundation in San Francisco, American Embassy in Beijing and American Consulate General in Shenyang.
