Dear Professor Horsman,

Greetings from Changchun. I have to apologize to you for the delay in replying your letter. This delay owing to the pressure of work at the beginning of the new school year. Moreover, Mr. Ma has waited for the approval of the State Commission of Education to make an advanced study of history in your university. Now he obtains the approval and will leave China for the United States in the latter half of October probably. He is going to study the main powers, i.e., America, England and Germany in the modern period under your direction. I would appreciate very much, if you could take good care of him.

I am very glad to know that Mr. Huang Ren Wei has well settled in Milwaukee. I am sure that he will make an intensive study of American history under your guidance.Thank you for your kind help to him, and I feel grateful as personal favor.

American Civil War and the Gilded Age, of which I was the chief editor, was published in Beijing last year. I think Mr. Huang has presented a copy of that book to you, asking your criticism.

As mentioned above, I have been very busy in teaching since the beginning of the new school year, because six graduates, of whom two are doctoral candidates, have been admitted to study the American history in our institute.

Miss Hu of our institute has done well in research work, she has written some articles on the American natives(based on your monograph on the same subject), the Dawes Act of 1887 and the feminism in American history, which have been published by several Chinese academic journals. I think you will be glad to know the research work she has done. She is going to write to you soon.

I have asked Mr. Ma to bring a small gift for you and for Professor David Buck respectively. I hope you will like it.

With best wishes to your family members.

Sincerely Yours,

Ruben Zemin Ding

Professor of History
