◎The May Fourth Movement
On May 4, 1919, students gathered and marched in Peking, now Beijing, to protest against the unreasonable decision of the Paris Peace Conference to hand over Germany's rights and interests in China's Shandong to Japan. The students demanded that the government refuse to sign the Peace Treaty and punish the traitors. The next day, students from various universities and colleges in Peking boycotted classes to protest the government's arrest of patriotic students and appealed to people in all walks of life across the country to “fight for sovereignty outside and punish the traitor inside.” The anti-imperialist and anti-feudal May Fourth Movement quickly swept across the country. On the afternoon of May 5, the news reached Tangshan Technical School and immediately aroused a strong response among the students, who decided to rally and echo the May Fourth Movement. Tens of thousands of industrial workers joined the patriotic students and became the main force in the anti-imperialist patriotic struggle in Tangshan, bringing the struggle to a climax. With the upsurge of the national anti-imperialist patriotic movement, the Peking warlord government gave up signing the peace treaty, a great victory for the May Fourth Movement. After that, the Tangshan people carried forward the spirit of the May Fourth Movement and worked together with the people in Beijing, Tianjin and other places under the coordination of various social federations, and continued to carry out the patriotic movement by resisting Japanese goods, opposing imperialism and the brutal rule of feudal warlords.(https://www.daowen.com)
