In 215 BC, Emperor Shihuang of the Qin Dynasty reached Jieshi during his eastward tour and built a temporary imperial palace there (excavated at Jinshanzui, Beidaihe in 1987).Then he sent people to search for Xianmen and Gaoshi immortals and immortal elixir, and engraved the Inscription on Jieshi Gate to show the national prestige.Qinhuangdao was named after this historical fact and it is the only city named after an emperor's title in the Chinese history, which adds profound connotation to the formation of the sea culture in the Qinhuangdao area.
