◎I.Yi and Qi Resigned Sovereign Authority

Two famous figures, Boyi and Shuqi, appeared in Guzhu State (today's Lulong) at the alternation of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties.Their stories were described in the first chapter of Sima Qian's Historical Records. The Confucian classics the Analects of Confucius also mentioned the morality and behavior of these two people many times.Confucius praised them as“Ancient sages who sought and obtained benevolence.”

At the end of the Shang Dynasty, Motai Chu, the king of Guzhu State, felt that he was old and dying. He decided to pass on the throne to his third son, Shuqi, which made Shuqi feel very embarrassed.According to the feudal system at that time, the eldest son should inherit the throne, that is to say,the eldest son Boyi should succeed. In order not to embarrass Shuqi, Boyi quietly ran away as soon as their father died.Seeing that, Shuqi thought that he would be subject for ridicule if he still stayed, so he left Guzhu State, too. Finally, the second son of Motai Chu inherited the throne. It was well-known that Boyi and Shuqi refused to accept the throne out of modesty.Guzhu State paid attention to poetry, calligraphy and etiquette, and Boyi and Shuqi had a deeper cultivation in this respect.

In the Celebrity List of Hebei Province published on July 24, 2007,there is a “historical legend of Boyi and Shuqi” declared by Lulong County of Qinhuangdao City.
