In the present investigation，histochemical，analytical and tissue culture methods were used to study the changes of starch，soluble sugars and pectic substances in the abscission layer zone of fruit petiole during boll shedding.The results of the experiments are summarized in Tables 1—3 and Figs.1—3，from which the following conclusions may be drawn：
（1）By comparing the shedding with the unshedding bolls，it shows that the accumulation of starch in cells of abscission layer zone is observed in the former one day before dropping，but it is reduced during the formation of abscission layer，while in the latter the starch is still accumulated in much denser state around the abscission layer zone during the boll development.The behavior of soluble sugars is found essentially the same as starch.(https://www.daowen.com)
（2）As an evidence of our experiment，the dropping of bolls is due to the dissolving of the middle lamella in the abscission layer cells，and consequently，the galacturonic acid is produced.However，the dissolving process is inhibited by the galactose.
The process of the formation of abscission layer is discussed in the light of the above findings，indicating that the action of galactose may be related to the metabolism of carbohydrates and pectic substances during the boll dropping.
