Some Suggestions for Writing a Memorable Resume[7]
Writing a resume is a daunting prospect for many. Here are some suggestions for making yours memorable.
Tell a Story.Perhaps the most important point to keep in mind when writing your resume is to think like a journalist. What is most significant about your story? What things were you able to accomplish in your job and education?State your case in terms of projects that you have directed, designed, developed, implemented, researched, reported, managed, controlled, planned, organized, edited,or built.Using such verbs strengthens your case.
Tailor your story to the job.Think how your experiences and qualifications relate to the job description.Use verbs and nouns found in that description in your resume.
Keep It Short and Succinct. For entrants new to the marketplace, most professionals advise that their resume be limited to a single page, although references(providing not only name, but title, postal address, telephone number, including area code, and email address)may constitute a second page or the reverse side of the resume. If you include references(it is appropriate to say instead that they are available on request),list at least three;five references, however, seem to be requested with growing frequency.Do not forget to ask your references for their permission to cite them in your resume.
Don't Get Personal. The resume may be safely assumed to conclude that your health is“excellent”without being told as much, and your age, gender, and marital status are your own business.Listing hobbies and pastimes can be a plus if they can be construed as giving you an edge for a job,but noting that you like“reading”as a hobby probably is a waste of space.
Be sure, however,to list everything that you think may enhance your qualifications for the job.It is appropriate to include indicators of your high character and sociability, such as being a member of a campus community, helping to prepare an important academic conference,or participating in some social activities.Do not, however, list qualifications in such a way that you are stretching the category in which it appears.Rather, develop a separate category for the qualification, such as“Early Achievements”,or“Community Service”.
Do Get Physical. It is critical that you design your resume with your reader uppermost in your mind.He or she likely will be plowing through a pile of resumes, and your job is to make your re sume easy to understand, absorb, and remember.
If you want your resume to physically stand out from the others,a colored type and a fancy font are not the ways to do it,as they send a message of idiosyncrasy.Use black type and a standard font of readable size, such as Times New Roman, size 12.
Embrace negative space. It beats a format of squashed paragraphs and microscopic margins every time.Be consistent in your overall format. Will you indent the opening sentence in each paragraph,or not?Be consistent in your use of HEADS,Subheads, and Sub-subheads.Assign a typeface to each one,as we have done here;that is,all capitals, boldface, and italics, respectively. Then stick to it.“Bullets”also can be clarifying and useful.Justify the right-hand margin;doing so presents a neater appearance.
Obsess over errors of spelling, grammar, and punctuation.Their presence in a resume spells failure for its author.
If you send a hard copy of your resume, use a heavy,highquality,cream-colored(not pastel)stationery to help it stand out.If your resumeis more than one page, number the pages and write your name,title,and/or organization in bold italics in an upper corner of each page. This keeps your name and identity in front of your reader at all times.
Electrifying Your Resume.Of course, the standard method of transmitting a resume is by email.Perhaps 80 percent of emailed re sumes are electronically searched for keywords before a human eye ever sees them, and resumes without those keywords die a quiet death.Scan job advertisements, job descriptions, and Websites for nouns and phrases that represent particular skills and experiences that your prospective employer thinks are important, and then plug them into your resume.Because computers count the number of times that keywords are used, repeat keywords moderately throughout your resume to assure that your resume survives its electronic culling.(https://www.daowen.com)
