Chapter Seven Identity Construction Adaptive to Co...
Having analyzed the identities chosen by advice-givers to construct through making linguistic choices (in Chapter Five) and the dynamic process of identity construction in advising sequences (in Chapter Six), this chapter attempts to explore why advice-givers choose to construct different identities through making linguistic choices and why they make identity modification and identity shift in advising sequences. Section 7.1 will discuss the communicative needs to be satisfied, which drive advice-givers to choose to construct different identities and to make identity modification and identity shift in advising sequences. This will be followed by the exploration of various contextual correlates in Section 7.2, because identity construction, as a means of satisfying communicative needs, always occurs in and constrained by certain communicative context. Section 7.3 serves to be a summary of this chapter.
