The Legend of the Butterfly Spring
At the foot of Cangshan Mountain，there is a butterfly spring，and its water is crystal clear.The water drops at the bottom of the pool rose like strings of pearls over the years.Nearby the spring，there is a big tree which is called a butterfly tree.Every April，the tree is full of golden yellow florets，scattered with a faint scent.A thick branch on the butterfly tree covers the whole pool like a big umbrella.It is said that all kinds of butterflies，holding each other's tails，hang down to the water from each branch，string by string.On the 25th of April in the lunar calendar every year，the ordinary people in Zhoucheng area of Dali come to the edge of the butterfly spring to hold a meeting to pay tribute to Du Chaoxuan，the python-killing hero of Zhoucheng Town.
According to the legend，Du Chaoxuan was a famous hunter in Yongsheng County on the east bank of Erhai Lake.One day，he came to a small village near Zhoucheng Town on the west bank of Erhai Lake and saw a woman crying with her baby in her arms.He was puzzled and asked her the reason，and then he knew that there was a magic ravine in the remote mountains in this area where no one dared to go.A python was living in a cave.The python could transform itself into a human figure.Every year on the third day of March in the lunar calendar，the python ordered the villagers to send him a small boy and a small girl to eat.If the villagers didn't send them on time，they would suffer trouble.
Du Chaoxuan decided to find a way to get rid of the python.He came alone to the magic ravine that no one had ever dared to visit.Sure enough，he saw a white python drinking water in the ravine far away.Du Chaoxuan aimed at the python and shot an arrow，and the python disappeared in the blink of an eye.
On the following day，early in the morning，Du Chaoxuan went to the cave again and found no trace of that python，but he saw two girls holding bloodstained white clothes and rubbing them on a stone.Du Chaoxuan thought to himself：How can there be two beautiful young women in a deserted place？Perhaps they are all pythons.So he came forward and asked them，“Who are you two washing the bloodstained clothes for？”The two women stammered，“We are washing our clothes.”Du Chaoxuan snarled，“If you don't tell me the truth，you will end up like this bird in the air.Look at my archery！”With saying this，he shot an arrow into the sky and a bird dropped down.
Seeing Du Chaoxuan's amazing martial arts，the two women told him the truth：“We are all good people.We two were grabbed by the python to the cave and were forced to be his wives.Yesterday，the python was injured while playing outside the cave，and the arrow has not been pulled out yet.This was his bloodstained garment.”The two girls told him the python was sleeping with the sword that never left him，so Du Chaoxuan asked the women to steal the sword.
Du Chaoxuan followed the two women into the cave and saw the python sleeping with eyes closed.He raised his sword to cut the python into three sections，and the blade was broken.
The two women thought that Du Chaoxuan was handsome and powerful，and had excellent martial arts.They admired him very much and couldn't help expressing their admiration for him.They said，“You are a great hero，and you saved our lives and treated us with great kindness.There is nothing we can do to repay for you，so we are willing to be your wives.”Hearing this，Du Chaoxuan waved his hands and said，“Please don't do that.Please don't do that.I have to kill the python for the people.How can you two be my wives？”No matter how heartily the women begged，Du Chaoxuan just refused their requests and went hunting up the mountain without looking back.
The two women could not catch up with the person they admired and were so sad that they jumped into the Longtan pool at the foot of Cangshan Mountain.
When Du Chaoxuan returned home from hunting，he remembered the two women he rescued in the python cave.After hearing they had committed suicide in the Longtan pool，he rushed to Longtan.The more he thought，the sadder he felt.Finally，he also jumped into the pool.
After Du Chaoxuan jumped into the pool，three beautiful butterflies flew out of the pool immediately.They flew back and forth on the water，inseparable，with two flying ahead，one behind.With time passing，the three butterflies had more and more descendants.And every April in the lunar calendar，many colorful butterflies come here，and the pool becomes a butterfly world.So，people call the pool the Butterfly Spring.
