Once upon a time，there were two brothers，one named Pan Gu and the other named Pan Sheng.Every day they went to the mountains to cut wood，and then sold it.One day，Pan Gu met the fortune-teller Miao Zhuangwang（according to the legend，he was Guanyin's father）on the street.He asked Miao Zhuangwang to tell his fortune，who answered，“From your fortune，you should go fishing instead of cutting wood.”
Pan Gu said，“I like fishing too，but I don't know where to go and when I should go fishing？”
Miao Zhuangwang said，“You should go fishing in Jinsha River on the third day of August in the lunar calendar，and you should go there as soon as the sun rises.But you can't catch the first fish or the second fish.You can only catch the red one.”
Pan Gu asked him again，“Can I cook the red fish if I catch it？”
Miao Zhuangwang said，“You must not cook it or sell it casually.If someone wants to buy a piece of it，you should ask for selling the whole one.If someone wants to buy the whole one，you should ask for selling a piece of it.And remember，you could only sell the fish to the man who offers you three hundred and sixty yuan！”
It turned out that the red fish was the third prince of the Dragon King.After he was caught by Pan Gu，the Dragon King was very worried.He went to the street every day to look for his son.At last，he found him.The Dragon King was afraid that the fish seller would cut the red fish into pieces and sell it to different people.Therefore，he offered the seller three hundred and sixty yuan to buy the red fish.The Dragon King felt puzzled：How did this seller catch this red fish？Someone must have taught him！So he asked Pan Gu：
“Who told you to catch this red fish？”
Pan Gu answered，“The fortune-teller Miao Zhuangwang.”The Dragon King wondered why Miao Zhuangwang was so clever and decided to meet Miao Zhuangwang in person.
After the Dragon King met Miao Zhuangwang，he asked Miao Zhuangwang，“Sir，please tell me how the rain will fall down this year！”
Miao Zhuangwang bent his fingers and said，“Two drops of rain in the city and three drops outside the city.”The Dragon King thought：The way the rain falls is entirely up to me.Since this man said the rain would fall two drops in the city，three drops out of the city，I must make the rain fall three drops in the city，two drops out of the city，and then I will see what he can do about it.
Unexpectedly，after the Dragon King did this，the rain had been falling for seven years.So the sky was mixed with the water，which caused a huge disaster.As a result，the sky collapsed and the earth cracked.From then on，there were no sky，no earth，no mankind，no sun and no moon.Only a black hole left.
This situation had remained for several years until the former dynasty that Pan Gu and Pan Sheng appeared again.Pan Gu asked Pan Sheng，“Younger brother，I'm willing to turn into the sky.Who will turn into the earth？”
Pan Sheng answered，“Elder brother，since you would turn into the sky，I will turn into the earth！”
So one of the brothers turned into the sky and the other into the earth.Pan Gu turned into the sky in the Year of the Rat，and Pan Sheng turned into the earth in the Year of the Ox.
But the sky and the earth that they transformed into were not yet complete.The sky was not perfect in the southwest，and the earth was still flawed in the northeast.Pan Gu and Pan Sheng were extremely worried，and every day，they thought about how to make up for the sky and how to fill the earth.Finally，they came up with a way：The sky was not full，but they could use clouds to make it full；the earth was uneven，they could fill it with water.From then on，the sky was perfect and the earth was flat.However，the earth transformed by Pan Sheng was much bigger than the sky transformed by Pan Gu.How to deal with it？Pan Sheng came up with a plan.He said to Pan Gu，“My earth does not match with your sky.I will shrink the earth a little bit.”Pan Gu was in favor of his younger brother's method very much.Pan Sheng reduced the earth by shrinking，which produced many wrinkles on the earth.And these wrinkles are the mountains of the earth.
After the sky and the earth were complete，Pan Gu and Pan Sheng were dead.When Pan Gu died，he was about six meters long，lying in the Guanyin Temple，with his head facing east and feet facing west.His eyes were as big as a bowl，and his mouth was as large as a basin.Strangely，whatever Guanyin told him to do，he did it.Wherever Guanyin's finger directed，he went the same direction.His left eye became the sun and his right eye became the moon.The day came when he opened his eyes，and the night fell when he closed his eyes.His teeth transformed into stars，his molar rocks，his eyebrows bamboos，his mouth villages，his fine hairs grass，his hair trees，his small intestine creeks，his large intestine rivers，his lung oceans，and his liver lakes.His nose became the Bijia mountain，his heart became the morning star，his breath became the wind，his oil became the clouds，his flesh became the soil，his bones became the big rocks，his fingers and toes became the birds and beasts.His two hands and two feet became the four mountains：the left hand became Jizu Mountain，the right hand became Wudang Mountain，the left foot became Diancangshan Mountain，and the right foot became Laojunshan Mountain.His hamstrings became roads，and his fingernails became tiles on the roof.
At this time，the flood washed everything on the ground，and only one brother and one sister were left by Guanyin，who hid them in a golden drum.Nobody knew where the flood washed them away.To look around for them，Guanyin walked for 99 days and 99 nights，and crossed over 99 mountains and 99 rivers.In the east，Guanyin reached in Hanyangkou；in the west，Guanyin reached in Husangguo；in the north，Guanyin reached in Leiyin Temple；in the south，Guanyin reached in Putuo Rock.Finally，they were found in Erhai Lake.But they were hidden in the golden drum，floating on the water.There was no way to salvage them out of the golden drum.
Just when Guanyin had no idea about it，a duck and an eagle came to help.The duck pushed on the water，and the eagle stretched its wings to help.With great efforts，they caught the golden drum out of the water.
Though the golden drum was caught，the sister and the brother were still unable to come out of the drum.Guanyin then went to ask for the help of the woodpecker，and promised to give it a hat if it could peck the golden drum open.The woodpecker agreed.Unexpectedly，the woodpecker made too many noises，Guanyin was afraid the noise would scare the brother and the sister to death，so Guanyin asked the woodpecker not to peck the drum any more，but Guanyin still gave a hat to the woodpecker.At present，the red tassel on the woodpecker's head was given by Guanyin at that time.
The woodpecker could not open the golden drum，so Guanyin went to ask the mouse for help.
The mouse came and said，“I will bite the golden drum open，but you must give me clothes and food！”
Guanyin said，“As long as you bite the gold drum open，you will get five kinds of cereal.”
The mouse agreed and kept biting and finally it bit the golden drum open.Then，Guanyin divided five kinds of cereal to the mouse.It's the reason why the mouse now can eat human food everywhere.
After the brother and the sister came out from the drum，their bodies were still connected together and could not be separated.Guanyin had to ask the swallow for help，and promised that as long as the swallow separated the brother and the sister，the swallow would be allowed to live in people's houses.The swallow agreed and cut them apart with wings which were sharper than a knife.From then on，the swallow was different from other birds and could live under people's eaves.
The brother's name was Zhao Yupei，and the sister's name was Tai Sanmei.Guanyin asked them to get married.Hearing this，the two began to cry and said，“We are brother and sister.How can we become husband and wife？”
Guanyin said，“Now there are only two of you in the world.When you become husband and wife，you can have children and reproduce offspring.”
Guanyin tried her best to persuade them，but the two just did not agree.Guanyin told one of them to go to the Eastern Mountain to burn incense，and the other to Western Mountain to burn incense.Shortly afterward，the smokes of the two mountains met slowly.Guanyin pointed to the met smokes and said，“You see，this sign proves that you can become husband and wife.”However，the two still did not agree.So，Guanyin asked each to take a small wooden stick and throw it into the river simultaneously.When the two sticks were thrown into the river，they soon turned into two beautiful goldfish and swam around in the water.
“One of the two goldfish in the river is male and the other is female，”Guanyin told them，“What else will you say？”
However，they still refused to get married.Guanyin added again，“Now，each of you carries a grinding wheel and rolls it from the top of the mountain to the deep valley.If the two grinding wheels fit together，you'll have to be husband and wife.”The two had no choice but to move a grinding wheel from the top of the mountain to the bottom.As a result，the grinding wheels combined as one.The two had nothing to say but to agree to get married.
When they got married，they had no house to live in.So they built a room made of the branches of a chestnut tree.There was no host for the wedding ceremony，so the pine was invited to be the host.There was no match-maker，so the plum tree was asked to be the match-maker；there was no cup to drink wine，so the peach tree was cut to make the cup.
Until nowadays，when young people get married，the Bai people hang chestnut leaves in their wedding rooms，and plant pines in front of their houses.The bride and the groom use the cups made of the peach tree to drink wine.
On the day of the wedding ceremony，many birds were invited to offer help.The amadavat became the Tidiao（The one who is in charge of personnel management during weddings，funerals，and feasts，etc.among the Bai people），the pigeons waited for the guests，the crows carried the water，the magpies cooked，the turtledove as the cook，and the finches served the tea.
Ten months after the two got married，the sister gave birth to a dogskin pocket with ten sons.Later，the ten sons had ten grandchildren，and they became a hundred families.Since then，they had each established a surname.This is the origin of the“100 surnames”.
