It was said that in the year of Dragon，there were one brother and one sister in a Bai people's mountain village in the western mountain of Eryuan County.The brother's name was Changming（means longevity in Chinese）and the sister's name was Fugui（means wealth in Chinese）.One day，the brother and the sister were both at home when a beautiful bird flew into their house，placed a gourd seed in its mouth on the table in front of them and flew away.The two felt puzzled.Why did the bird send a gourd seed？Can this gourd seed take root？Then they planted the gourd seed in the ground，watered，fertilized and weeded it every day.Later，the gourd seed took root and sprouted，strung out green vines and produced a huge gourd.
Soon the gourd was ripe.One morning，it was very hot.The brother and the sister went to see the gourd again.They found that the gourd had already separated from the vine.They wanted to carry the gourd home.But the gourd split into two halves，with seeds of five kinds of cereal inside.The brother Changming entered into the gourd.He felt extremely cool inside and smelt a faint fragrance.So，he called his younger sister Fugui，“Come in quickly！It's cool and fragrant here！”Fugui did what her brother said.As soon as the two sat down inside the gourd，the gourd closed.A big flood came just when the gourd closed.The boundless flood covered all the villages and fields，and no one else survived.Only Changming and Fugui drifted along the water in the gourd.They did not know how long they had floated and where they had gone.When the gourd stopped floating，it grew stuffy inside.They wanted to come out of the gourd but could not open it.They called out for help.A god heard their cries and turned into a bird，and then asked the golden eagle to peck at the gourd.However，the golden eagle was unable to make the gourd open.Then the god asked the crane to peck at it but the crane could not open it either.At last the mouse was asked to bite the gourd.The mouse bit it hard with its teeth from dusk till dawn.Finally the mouse bit the gourd open.The brother and the sister came out of the gourd.Because the mouse bit the gourd open，the god allowed the mouse to eat the five kinds of cereal planted by human beings.
After the two came out of the gourd，they built a house，cultivated wasteland to grow crops，and lived there.After a few years，the two grew up.In order to reproduce human offspring，the god turned into the bird again and asked them to get married.The elder brother agreed，but the younger sister stubbornly disagreed and said，“This is impossible.”The bird told the elder brother to take the upper cover of the stone mill and the younger sister to take the lower cover of the same stone mill，and asked them to roll the cover down from the two opposite hills.If the stone mill could be combined into one，then they could get married.If the stone mill could not integrate into one，they could not get married.As a result，the two covers of the stone mill rolled down the hill and formed into one，but the sister still disagreed to marry her brother.The bird then asked the elder brother to take a thread and the younger sister to take a needle，and asked them to drop it from two separate hills.If the thread could go through the needle，they could get married.As a result，the thread went through the needle，but the younger sister still said no.The bird then asked them to set up a fire on the top of the two separate hills.If the two flames and smoke twisted together in the sky，they could get married.As a result，the two strands of blue smoke from the two hilltops twisted up in mid-air，so the sister had to agree to marry her brother.
A year later，the sister was pregnant.However，what she gave birth to was not a human being but a lump of meat.They cut the meat into 100 pieces and placed them on the roadsides，rocks，and trees of the mountain.
The following morning，when they got up，they found many new houses around their house，with smoke rising from the kitchen chimneys.Many men and women were coming and going.The brother and the sister went to inquire about it.It turned out that these people were the descendants of the meat they threw away the night before.There were just 100 families.Each family has one surname，so there were 100 surnames.From then on，the world had a hundred surnames and human beings began to be thriving.
