WASHINGTON—Helen, a floor attendant at Travelodge Alexandria, has just moved here from Uganda with her mother for 2 years. Without the right to vote, she didn't pay much attention to the presidential election but she preferred Obama to Romney. At the subway station near the Capitol Hill, an anonymous traveler from Sweden, on the contrary, paid close attention to this presidential election. He said he would vote for Obama if he had the right to vote.
Helen, from Uganda, has not been granted the permanent residence yet and she said the reason why she preferred Obama was that they shared the same skin color. The Swedish old man, having stayed in America for the last three weeks, however, kept being informed of the 2012 US presidential election by reading newspapers, especially the Washington Post when he was in America. When at home in Sweden, he often watched international TV news, read international magazines to get well-informed. He supported Obama, as he said,"Obama had his attention focused on international trading and working together with allies in Europe, while Romney was inexperienced in foreign affairs."
"Romney represents the big companies and the rich ones and he is not the man for the future." The old man later explained,"He is looking back on the capitalistic way and the capitalistic way does not work." As he suggested, it should be "socialistic way where everybody is working together", not only the collaboration between the few very rich who want to rule the rest of the country." He finally added,"That is not the right way, at least not how we define democracy in Europe, especially in Sweden."
