5.The Governmental Efforts on Promoting Chinese and Other Asian Languages

The introduction of VCE Chinese LCSis not the first attempt of Australian authority to promote school-level Asian language(including Chinese)education.Since late 1960s,both government and non-government reports have already realised the relationship between linguistic competence and economic performance and/or the relationship between Asian language skills and Australian export performance(Rudd,1994).In mid-1970s,advocacies of selecting Asian languages for community language curricula and reversing the historical preference for European languages emerged and gained increasing supports when the economic performance of Asian countries showed great strength in 1980s and 1990s(Lo Bianco and Slaughter,2009).During these two decades, the federal government adopted reports on Australian accommodation to its Asian geographic and security context and resulted in growing efforts on promoting chosen Asian languages in secondary school curriculum.
