T he residences of historic personalities are a traditional cultural heritage, but they are also functional spaces in contemporary society.Therefore, the relationship between their protection and development is contradictory while interdependent.Protection is the foundation of future development of these sites.The development that adapts to change while maintains the historic characteristics can make these famous residences full of vitality and ultimately further promotes their protection.
The residences of historic personalities in Jinan are an important carrier of urban culture.Their existence provides not only a rich historical memory for urban residents, but may also a cultural driving force for future urban development practices.In the implementation of sustainable development, these old houses will not only “live” but also “shine”.However, through a broad search, few examples of published literatures and cases about sustainable development of the historic personalities’ former residence in Jinan was found.Current theories and practices of preservation and development of these notable residences sustainably are insufficient.
