Lao She’s residence has attached great importance by cultural heritage department.Government invest a large amount of funding to restore it, aiming to create a cultural tourist destination of Jinan.However, except some students and researchers, not many tourists come here every year.And after a visit, it’s almost impossible to come again.The monotonous management has resulted in the loss of public interest.concerning the present situation, it is key to formulate a sustainable development strategy for its management to promote the interaction process with public, to stimulate public enthusiasm for Lao She’s culture, thereby integrating this memorial into public modern life.Additionally, the well-protected cultural surrounding and eco-environment of the residence are also the vital factors for attracting public’s attention.
8.2.4.1 Developing a Specific Protection and Revitalization Policy
As an important cultural heritage site, Lao She’s residence should has its own protection, management and development regulations, which emphasizing the heritage value of architecture, courtyard and other details, formulating a strict system for its protection.Intangible culture protection methods should be formulated, to display Lao She’s life experience, to broaden and develop his contribution.Meanwhile, regulations for the prevention of natural disasters and man-made risks are essential.Disasters and risks such as fires, floods, earthquakes, negative behavior of tourists, and the impact from urbanization should be assessed.The corresponding prevention policies should be formulated.
8.2.4.2 Rectifying the Environment
Lao She’s residence is located in Nanxin Street, North of the Western Campus of Shandong University (formerly Qilu University), which is the key historical and cultural protection area of Jinan.Nanxin Street is also a key protected area in this area.In such a context, the surrounding protection of Lao She’s residence is vital.However, its cultural surrounding and eco-environment status are pretty poor.Ancient trees and traditional slate roads have disappeared due to the development of modern urban construction.The involvement of many modern elements unrelated to Lao She’ era makes it more difficult for tourists to connect the environment with Lao She’ culture as its focus.Therefore, eliminating the unrelated elements and restoring a benign ecological environment are the basis for the sustainable development of Lao She residence.
8.2.4.3 Activating an Exhibition Format
Although the management agency possesses rich information and materials of Lao She and his residence, due to the lack of flexible means of exhibition art, the display form is pretty rigid, which is also a reason for the disappointment of tourists.Therefore, enriching the forms of exhibition by means of art, science, technology and increasing interaction between exhibition and tourists are important ways to attract tourists to visit and to understand Lao She’s culture in depth.(https://www.daowen.com)
8.2.4.4 Establishing a Lao She’s Cultural Circle
In addition to the protection and display of the residence and courtyard, Lao She’s culture should be extended out of the courtyard, creating a residencecentered cultural circle.Through fully excavating Lao She’s life experience in Jinan, such as his work places, his other former residences, the path he used to walk, the tea house where he often met his friends, and other places of special significance with Lao She, it is necessary to form a larger Lao She’s culture circle.This method will further enlarge the influence of Lao She and completely integrate his spirit into contemporary life.
8.2.4.5 Encouraging Public Participation
Through the establishment of a Lao She’s Cultural Circle, the enthusiasm of the public to participate in the protection and development of Lao She’ tangible and intangible heritage is also stimulated.The essential means such as establishment of a Lao She Cultural Research Center for students and scholars to study Lao She-related culture, the establishment of a Lao She Theater to perform his works, and the establishment of souvenir shops according to Lao She cultural characteristics are all means to attract various groups to participate in heritage protection and continue Lao She’s career in a sustainable way.
