In March 2007, Chen Mian’s residence was announced as a municipal cultural heritage sites, and in October 2013, it was listed among the provincial cultural heritage sites.As one of the best traditional buildings in the old area of Jinan, its preservation situation seems poor.The media has regularly reported that the residence was seriously damaged due to a lack of regular repair and maintenance.Although the courtyard is large, it is divided into numerous narrow spaces by the households that now occupy it.The houses are dilapidated with various temporary constructions crowded within the courtyards.It is difficult to find the glory of past years.Many inhabitants worried about the potential safety of their houses and moved out of the courtyard.Now there are only about ten families living inside.
Recently, the Municipal Planning Bureau issued Advice on Jinan Historical and Cultural City Protection Plan, in which the ‘one vertical, two horizontal, multinodes’ block protection pattern was proposed.This document proposed that small public spaces in traditional streets and alleys should be renovated, and parks should be added properly in combination with historic architecture restoration without destroying the pattern and style of the block.The art works coordinated with the traditional cultural style should be allocated to enrich the lifestyle of local inhabitants.Chen Mian’ s residence is in the ancient urban area of the Ming Dynasty, which is an important part of the protection plan of Jinan.Since the end of 2014, the Jinan municipal government has started the protection and development process for the ancient area of Jinan (Fig.8-12).Now the second phase of the restoration and revitalization plan has been completed, and the relocation methods for residents in historic residences are being studied.Meanwhile, the specific protection plan of this residential heritage sites is also being proposed (Fig.8-13,8-14).
