Antimalarial drugs
2.1 Drugs for treatment of blood-st?age infection
The clinical attack of malaria is caused by the merozoite of Plasmodium in the blood (erythrocytic stage). The schizozoidal drugs have an efficacy on the malaria parasite in this period. As a consequence, they can clear the parasites from the blood quickly. Antimalarial drugs can be divided into strong and weak according to their efficacies. The former has artemisinin, pyronaridine, piperaquine, naphthoquine, mefloquine, chloroquine, quinine, adipine, amodiaquine and so on. While the latter has lumefantrine, proguauil, sulfonamides, sulfones, antibiotics and so on.

At present, only 8-aminoquinoline drugs can kill the liver tissue stage and gametophyte of Plasmodium. Primaquine and tafenoquine are currently recommended by WHO and approved by FDA in the United States. Primaquine is commonly used in China.
2.3 Drugs mainly used for chemoprevention
The drugs that inhibit liver-stage or kill asexual blood stages are compound piperaquine (269g piperaquine phosphate, 50 mg sulfadoxine). Piperaquine and chloroquine have inhibitory preventive effect because the drugs are eliminated slowly from the body.
