Enhancing Teacher Capacity for English Literacy Instruction
This chapter argues that knowledge about language and its meaning-making potential needs be part of the professional knowledge for every English teacher. Specifically, it delineates the knowledge base that English teachers need for effective literacy instruction, discusses the challenges in developing linguistic subject knowledge among English teachers, reviews best practices in supporting teachers to learn and implement functional grammar, and presents caveats about using functional grammar in literacy instruction.
