三、研究方法
基本采取历史分析法。缅甸的政治转型不是一蹴而就的，缅甸的外交变化不是突然转变的，缅甸大政方针的变化与外交活动的变化，是一个过程，一个具有阶段性的过程，一个具有连续性的过程。对政治转型的巨变，放到历史的角度来解读，分析其背后的因素和动力。
首先，是断代史的方法，突出分析2011年缅甸新政府成立后缅甸的外交。将2010年11月大选作为缅甸政治转型的节点，将2011年新政府成立作为缅甸外交活动的新起点，认为2011年开始了缅甸对外关系的新阶段，对这一新阶段的外交进行梳理、分析、归纳。
其次，是专门史的方法，主要分析缅甸“外交史”，是缅甸政治转型及其国家大政方针变化后的外交关系与活动的专门史。论文采取单项的逻辑，即政治转型——外交变化，而没有分析外交变化对缅甸政治转型的反作用。
再次，是通史的方法。这里有三个层面的含义，从世界历史和全球史中分析观察缅甸的外交史，从缅甸整体历史中分析缅甸的外交活动，从缅甸外交发展演变过程中分析观察缅甸2011年以来的外交活动。本论文主要应用的是第三个层面，前两个层面较少论及。
在研究过程中，对文献资料进行搜集、鉴别、整理，进而对缅甸外交事实进行科学的历史认识和归纳，剖析2011年以来缅甸外交的特点、要素。
在研究分析中，主要应用世界历史理论，地缘理论，国际关系现实主义理论等。
