4.4 PRESENTATION OF CONTENT

The presentation of toasts should also follow some principles listed as follows:

(1)Brief and Simple in Diction

Since a toast is intended to be read before an audience, the language of it should be brief.Difficult words and complex sentence structures will often prove difficult for the audience to catch the meaning of the toast.Furthermore, simple words combined in brief sentences will be helpful for building up the force of the toast, which in turn will be effective in summoning up the audience's passion and ardor.

(2)Pertinent in Contents(https://www.daowen.com)

When reviewing the history of the person(s)being addressed, the speaker should just tell suitable incidents.Past failures or scandals about the honored person(s)will not only bring about great discomfort or shame, but also ruin the gathering. Therefore, before writing a toast speech, the speaker should make a survey about the person(s)to be honored and select what match the person(s)and occasion to be celebrated.

(3)Using Nonverbal Language

Nonverbal language plays an essential role in delivering a toast. Before starting the toast, the addresser normally stands up,looks around, and holds up his/her glass of wine.During the process of the delivery, the addresser should make constant eye contact with the audience to show his sincerity and friendliness, instead of keeping his/her eyes on the script of the toast speech. At the close of the toast, the addresser should again raise high his/her glass of wine in calling for the response from the audience.
