Text B Sport&colonialism
Progressive reformers even invoked sport to inculcate American WASP values in overseas colonies.Under the guise of the“whiteman’s burden1,”European powers colonized the globe, rationalizing their occupation of foreign lands as bettering the populations by bringing Christianity and white civilization to them. The British, foremost of the imperial powers in the nineteenth century, counted their worldwide dominions and bragged that the sun never set upon the British Empire.Foreign colonies provided natural resources, cheap labor, andmarkets for surplus goods in the expanding industrial economies. The United States lagged behind the Europeans in such acquisitions until 1898.That same year,it annexed Hawaii in the wake of a coup orchestrated by American businessmen who had wrested control of the islands from the Hawaiian monarch in 1893.
