Even before the United States began its imperial march，American traders had sought foreign ports.American expatriates brought baseball to China as early as 1863，and teachers，missionaries，and the YMCA promoted American games throughout Asia.By 1877，missionaries had established more than two hundred schools that endeavored to promote Christianity in China.By the 1890s，more than one thousand Americans preached Protestantism and sport as a means to modernization；but physical activity seemed too much like work to upper-class Chinese.Still，the Americans persisted with baseball and track-and-field competitions，and the YMCA introduced basketball and volleyball in 1895.
