The United Stateswas amostly agricultural nation in the Antebellum Period,and the focus on betterment of farming spurred development of the agricultural press,with attention to the health of farm families and improved techniques for farming.One such publication,the American Farmer,was founded in 1819,by John Stuart Skinner1.He developed two special departments in the American Farmer:a sporting section and a women's section.Skinner regularly included articles and advice on sport,recreation,and physical health for farm men and women.
As sport coverage greWin newspapers and sporting journals,manuals and advice books also increased the dissemination of sportrelated information.In cities and towns,men and women reading about sport at home and in educational institutions found new books touting positive effects of sport,describing rules,and introducing new sports equipment.
