6.3.1 Internalization of poetic cultural cognitive...
Image-G reinforcement strategy implies that incoming elements adopted by translators in TT are a Gestalt reinforcement of poetic cultural cognitive models.Though this is a schematic reinforcement approach,it is also one that internalizes and incorporates poetic cultural cognitive models of the original image-G.Quite a few scholars propose that cultural models are culturally-formed cognitive archetypes, which derive from and rely on cognitive subjects'apprehension, ratiocination, and cognitive activities concerned of a specific social group(Dandrade,1987;Strauss,1992;Cienki,1999;Kristiansen & Dirven,2008).Accordingly,in literary category, the Gestalt whole and aesthetic attributes of poetic cultural cognitive model in classical Chinese poetry seem to rest on its literary context and,in a wider sense,on poets'social and cultural experience, which is thought to be organized in certain cognitive and cultural models and embodied in peculiar poetic-speech mode and its features(Sharifian,2007).In other words, poets'social and cultural experience provides the contextual background for translators'construal of Gestalt whole and aesthetic attributes of poetic cultural cognitive model in image-G actualization, which in turn facilitates translators in internalizing and incorporating poetic cultural cognitive models of the original image-G.Clearly,then,translators can neither avoid the influence of poetic cultural cognitive models nor function without it in the operation of image-G actualization.
The Gestalt reinforcement approach of poetic cultural cognitive models is not just dependent on the mental concept translators have of the images in classical Chinese poetry, but a cognitive representation of the interaction between images. In addition, this cognitive representation is not really an isolated mental experience of Gestalt contour in ST at all,but is associated with related knowledge about translators'stored cognitive representations that belong to a certain Gestalt contour(Quinn & Holland,1987).On the one hand, the mental concept of images concerning poetic cultural cognitive models is retrieved from translators'storage of specific Gestalt contour. On the other hand, translators'immediate mental experience of poetic cultural cognitive models in ST calls up other cognitive representations from their long-term memory that are somehow correlated with it.What is suggested is that other cognitive representations are not after all the fixed reference points for mental concept of poetic cultural cognitive models that translators have assumed them to be,but that they are liable to remain in a state of flux when subjectively mental experience enlarges(Langacker,1993).In fact,in the case of online construction processing where a more dynamic experience-oriented approach seems to be important, translators'widened mental experience contributes significantly to the capability of cognitive representations to function as cognitive reference point.(https://www.daowen.com)
It should be emphasized that the Gestalt reinforcement approach defines translators'social and cultural experience as the set of background assumptions of Gestalt reinforcement that are necessary for poetic cultural cognitive models to be internalized and incorporated. The internalized one itself in TT can emphasize and reinforce Gestalt and aesthetic attributes that are not prominent in ST.As a result,it contains the adaptive denotation and connotation of cognitive representations in ST and contributes to the this situation in which Gestalt and aesthetic attributes are constructed in TT.Besides, the most dominant characters of image-G reinforcement strategy lie on the points that incoming elements brought by concrete cognitive and cultural models intensify Gestalt whole and aesthetic attributes of poetic cultural cognitive models. Thus, the core of the strategy is rested with to make the process of reinforcing Gestalt whole and aesthetic attributes plain and clear.
