3.2 Data Collection
As the corpus designed for this book is a comparable one,the raw materials are com posed of two parts:O riginal English Tourism Texts and Translated English Tourism Texts. In the process of data collection, representativeness is of great im portance because it“determines the kinds of research questions that can be addressed and the generalizability of the results of the research”(Biber 2000:246).
Giving consideration to both unification and diversity, most of the collected texts are about tourist attractions in America, some in Britain,Canada and Australia. The selective range is aswide as possible,so the characteristics and stylistics of the tourism texts of English-speaking countries can be well represented.(https://www.daowen.com)
To make sure the quality, translated English raw materials are sam pled from Chinese authorized travel guide websites. The broad selection range ensures the features of the textswon't be affected by one or a few translators'specific translation style.Considering that English is one of the official languages in Hong Kong, the tourism texts introduced in Hong Kong may be likely to be similar with the original ones. Therefore, most texts are about tourist attractions in themainland, only a fewintroduce spots in Hong Kong,Macau and Taiwan.
