3.4 Annotation

“W ithin corpus linguistics, and more especially among computational linguists over the last two decades, ways of improving automatic word-class tagging as an essential prerequisite for further syntactic analysis has been a major preoccupation.”(Kennedy 2000:212)Considering the importance of annotation, the writer uses CLAWS(the Constituent Likelihood Automatic Word-tagging System)to have the corpus POS tagged[1].CLAWS has been continuously developed since the early 1980s by UCREL at Lancaster, the accuracy ofwhich has reached 96%.(https://www.daowen.com)

The automatic grammatical tagging makes the POS search and analysis available. It“can provide information not only on whether an individual form occursmore often, say,as a noun or a verb, but tagging can also show the frequency and distribution of word classes in a corpus”(Kennedy 2000:102).
